Living in Saint-Eustache!

Saint-Eustache is a beautiful, unpretentious little town of about 47,000 inhabitants (2023) located on the northwestern tip of Laval Island. There are many advantages to living in Saint-Eustache, and not just the fact that the town has 11 breakfast restaurants. 11! Yes, Eustachians really do like to eat breakfast, apparently. In this article, I'll introduce you to the pros and cons of living in Saint-Eustache and help you discover this charming town.

What are the advantages of living in Saint-Eustache?

Ask most residents, and they're very satisfied with the city's management and services. Here's a short list of the city's main attractions:

  • Saint-Eustache Hospital
  • Guy-Bélisle library, a magnificent glassed-in library on the waterfront
  • The ecocenter
  • Several schools, including 10 preschools and elementary schools and two high schools.
  • The Complexe aquatique Saint-Eustache offers a wide range of sporting activities, including a competitive pool and a recreational pool. Open all year round.
  • The Complexe Walter-Buswell integrates the Florian-Guindon arena and the Paul-Tardif arena. Activities include floor field hockey, floor skating, minor field hockey and lacrosse.
  • The Complexe multisport Saint-Eustache offers a host of indoor and outdoor sports activities.
  • Several municipal parks (45) with dozens of ball fields, soccer fields, tennis courts, skating rinks and other physical activity areas. Dozens of skating, walking and cycling rinks and trails, as well as tobogganing areas, cross-country ski trails with 3 routes graded from easy to moderate, and an ecological trail.
  • Over 73 kilometers of bike paths.
  • The municipality, located along the Rivière des Mille Îles, offers picturesque landscapes and opportunities for outdoor adventure. The Parc de la Rivière-des-Mille-Îles - Parc Boisé des Moissons sector is home to one of the region's greatest biodiversities.
  • The air quality index (AQI) is currently good.
  • What's more, residents benefit from free or very attractive rates for the use of these facilities.

The disadvantages ...

I see 3 disadvantages of living in Saint-Eustache.

  1. Ask residents on Facebook as I did and the #1 complaint is the increase in traffic in recent years. Depending on where you live, you might get frustrated during rush hour. But honestly, it's pretty much the same everywhere.
  2. If you like to store for clothes, you'll have very few options, apart from a Winners in the North End and a few boutiques in the old, old, old mall, Place Saint-Eustache. Unless you go to Giant Tiger, you'll have to go to Boisbriand next door, Rosemère or Laval.
  3. Finally, living in Saint-Eustache is much easier by car than by public transit, although it's getting better. There's now a bus that goes to the Montmorency Metro station in Laval, but if you want to get anywhere else in Laval, it's going to be a bit complicated. The train station for the new REM that will one day open in Deux-Montagnes next door, will give you quick access to Montreal. For everything else, there's always the bike.

This is a brief summary of what you need to know about Saint-Eustache. If I've left anything out, please let us know in the comments.
