1 speaker, 2,000 Real Estate agents, 3 days of conference, 50 pages of notes. Of course, our objectives were to build our Real Estate business and sales skills, but we can always glean some great points to share that apply to almost anyone, regardless of what you do in life.

So here is the 9 points we learned that can make your year a great one :

1. Just start. The best way to start is to stop talking about starting. Don’t wait for the perfect conditions… for the moon and stars to align.

2. Study truly successful people and what they do. Each area of life has its heroes. Analyze how they got to where they are. What sacrifices did they have to make? Their typical day looks like what? Can you meet them and learn from them? More often than not, sucessful people are very generous with their knowledge and love to share it.

3. Have a learning plan. Read more books and listen to more great speakers. Group with people who are equally goal-oriented and who you can learn from.

4. Avoid useless distractions. Social Media, text messages, emails, etc have their place, but are usually detrimental during real work time. We know today that these distractions are highly addictive. They only give an impression of being busy and productive. The best way to be truly efficient (and zen!) is to turn everything off and work in blocks of time. Then reserve a specific block of time to return voicemails, emails, etc. Test it out for a couple days and you’ll see the difference right away in how much you can accomplish in a day!

5. Create your perfect schedule. Write down your perfect schedule with the goal of following it 70% of the time. Ask someone to hold you accountable to the schedule you’ve set. Many have found extremely useful to have what is called an « accountability partner » who they communicate with a few times a day to make sure both are doing what they should be doing. Accountability is one of the best ways to follow your schedule. Time blocking is another (see point 4.)

Perfect jogging weather.

6. Upgrade your appearance. Unfortunately, people will judge us within the first seconds of a first contact. It’s sad but true. It’s therefore imperative (especially if we work in sales or a similar area) to always look our best. It not only has an impact on how others view us, but also on our self-confidence.

Nice weather in San Diego.. around 18 degrees every day.

7. Shut out the negative. The world around us is negative. So negative, that it drowns out the positive by simply its strength (just think of how bad news sells more than good news!). Staying positive and keeping a strong mindset is like swimming against the current, you have to work for it. How? By being very careful about what we read and who we spend our time with. Avoid the news. Avoid energy suckers. In short, protect what goes into your mind.

8. Set short-term goals. Small, short-term goals are easy enough to attain, yet extremely powerful. They boost our self-esteem every time we reach one so align your big goals with a bunch of little goals. You will love the process so much more.

9. Success is not a goal. It is a journey of continually accomplishing small and big goals. A truly successful person never stops setting and reaching goals. Earl Nightingale once said, “success is the progressive realization of a worthwhile goal or objective”. It’s a path. It’s a process. Reaching a goal should just naturally lead to another goal.

We learned that 95% of the population are not motivated to do anything of consequence. By applying these 9 points, I’m convinced that you will be part of the 5% that sets you apart from the rest by having worthwhile goals, and more importantly, reaching them!
